Nail Polish Review : A riveting courtroom drama

Critic's Rating: 3.5/5
STORY: An accused of the murder of migrant worker's children, Veer Singh (Manav Kaul) faces the court trials. But this case takes numerous startling turns. Is it true that he is a merciless killer, or is he simply being targeted under assumption?

REVIEW: Set in Lucknow, ‘Nail Polish’ revolves around DCP Sunil Sachdev (Sameer Dharmadhikari), who stumbles upon evidence of migrant worker's kids being abducted, murdered with their bodies being set to fire. This leads him to an unexpected suspect, a former Army officer Veer Singh (Manav Kaul), who worked as an undercover spy. Post-retirement, he continues to live a gentleman's life with a great reputation working as a coach in a sports academy. Siddharth Jaisingh aka Sid (Arjun Rampal), a high-profile defence lawyer agrees to fight this case as he is promised a Rajya Sabha seat consequent to his winning Veer's case. And the state hires public prosecutor Amit Kumar (Anand Tiwari) to make sure Veer is proven guilty. This leads them to the courtroom trial where the drama unfolds. And an unforeseen turn in the case proves that there is more to it than meets the eye.

Legal dramas are a tough genre to pull off without falling prey to its tropes. On that count, Bugs Bhargava Krishna has done a commendable job as being both director and writer of the film. Without wasting any time, the director comes straight to the point. He takes us quickly through the pieces of evidence which might prove Veer guilty. The screenplay is quite intriguing and keeps you snared initially, however, what follows is predictable. Still, both the backstories and the court proceedings in this murder trial are flawlessly intertwined which leaves the viewers guessing till the very end. The background score by Sanjay Wandrekar is impactful and helps in enhancing the drama. Overall, ‘Nail Polish’ is inspired by true incidents but it lacks the unnerving tension one ideally anticipates from such films.

Manav Kaul steals the show as Veer Singh. His character has many sides as one moment he is a calm and lawful citizen of the society and in the very next, he is aggressive and attacks the fellow prisoner. What’s more, the change in his body language and dialogue delivery is played with the utmost ease. Time and again he has proved that he can play a range of diverse roles.

Coming to other performances, everyone puts in an impressive act. Arjun Rampal perfectly slips into the shoes of a lawyer with high political aspirations, Sid Jaisingh, who with selfish motives defends Veer. His commanding presence is quite invasive. Rajit Kapur as Judge Kishore Bhushan gives a striking performance and his relationship with his on-screen wife Shobha played by Madhoo Shah is quite heart-warming. However, it isn’t clear why she is sad and turned into an alcoholic. Anand Tiwari’s performance as the empathetic attorney Amit Kumar, who misses the mark in comparison with Rampal. The remaining cast lend good support in pushing the narrative forward.

All said, ‘Nail Polish’ is a compelling thriller which can be watched for its story and most importantly the outstanding performances.

Very intriguing and edge of the seat thriller and the cast led by Manav Kaul giving an outstanding performance and the rest of the performers were perfectly matched with the characters. Except the song sequence most of the things falls in place for this thrilling films. A tribute to the Master Hitchcock.
